![]() ![]() I wish they had just given us the option to play either way. All changes made deliberately to keep that kart-style lighter gameplay. So, you have pretty good powerups, yes, but you can't see what you are picking up to have agency over your fighting, you can't carry more than one to use them intelligently and reactively, and you can't constantly see behind you to fight forward and backward at the same time. I like Sonic Racing Transformed, but it still hurts how the devs from Blur brought so many great ideas for powerup racing, but gutted the actual realization of the play by kartifying things with no other option. At least three stars is enough to unlock everything. Never did get all those S ranks, and I doubt I ever will. The main knock I would have against it would be the rubberbanding. Sonic's powerups tend to be a little less overpowered when they do hit, and can more often be avoided. I can understand Mario Kart's emphasis on making sure everyone can play and giving those in last place the best chances, but it can feel a bit cheap to those at the front. If there was a free-roam mode where I could just fly around randomly exploring the tracks, I'd do it. They clearly poured a lot of love and attention to detail in each racing world. I know Mario Kart is ostensibly the same, but I feel like there's a lot more visually separating the tracks in Sonic than there is in Mario. But I don't think it's just nostalgia, each track is its own spectacle, like a racecourse through its own world, that evolves as you go through each lap. Afterburner, Golden Axe, House of the Dead, I love how they transposed those settings into racecourses. Maybe it's because I was arcade kid back in the day, but Sega was my youth. Mario Kart is a little too fast paced for my liking, I feel like this is fast enough whilst also giving me time to enjoy the race and the levels. This is definitely my favourite Kart racer. I'd be interested to hear everyone's thoughts on Racing Transformed, Mario Kart and the genre as a whole. I am replaying Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed again as I think it's the best of the genre I have played because it balances the chaos and driving finesse on top of having a number of interesting challenges outside of just straight up racing. I personally think that Mario Kart kind of got worse after Mario Kart Double Dash on the Gamecube as the games got increasingly more ridiculous with the items that just shook things up constantly and almost nullified any driving finesse.ĭespite that, when I find a game I do like in this genre, I tend to get really into it. Mario Kart itself has become one of the most popular video game series ever and has had, at this point, 9 games. Over the years since there have been a ton of games that try to capitalize on it, most being utter garbage. I loved the mix of arcade racing mixed with the use of weaponry. I loved it, it was my very favorite game for a long time. I played the original Super Mario Kart shortly after it was released in 1993, my mom rented it for me when I won the Pinewood Derby in Cub Scouts, which I find wonderfully appropriate when I look back on it. Kart racers are an interesting genre for me. Please use flair to display what games you’re currently playing, not a punch line, username, tag, URL, or signature.
